DriveID device aims to curb distracted driving

With the gap between technology and vehicles getting smaller and smaller, distracted driving is arguably one of the most deadly incidents on the road today.

New technological advances have aimed to curb the desire to use a cell phone while on the road, according to NBCNews.com.

One of the newest devices is DriveID, a product that prevents the driver’s cell phone from making or receiving calls or text messages.

According to a 2013 National Safety Council study, about 1.2 million accidents that year involved drivers talking on cell phones. Another 341,000 accidents involved people texting and driving.

This product uses CellControl technology to accurately detect who is sitting in the driver’s seat and then disables their mobile devices. In case of an emergency, the driver would still be able to dial 911.

Parents can choose to receive alerts and scores based on their teenager’s driving, as well as performance reviews, including excessive speed, rapid acceleration, harsh braking and inappropriate phone usage.

The device will sell for $129 and will mount behind the rear view mirror.
