Charley Saturmin Robinet, the man fatally shot by Los Angeles police following a public struggle on Skid Row last Sunday, was wanted by U.S. Marshals for violating his probation, Time Magazine reported.
A federal warrant was issued for the Robinet’s arrest in January after he failed to report to his probation officer multiple times beginning last November.
Robinet, who was also known as “Africa” or “Cameroon,” was released from prison last May after being convicted in 2000 of holding up a Wells Fargo Bank and pistol-whipping an employee.
Robinet had been living in the U.S. under the identity of a French national when he was killed by an Los Angeles police officer after a struggle for the officer’s gun.
The shooting, which was caught on surveillance cameras, witness videos, and body cameras, showed the struggle between the homeless man and several officers before Robinet attempted to grab for one of the officer’s guns. At that point, officers opened fire.
Officers were called to the scene in response to a robbery report and attempted to confront the combative man before the situation escalated.
In the wake of several deaths of unarmed black men at the hands of police officers, Robinet’s death has sparked outrage throughout the nation.
Many supporters of Robinet have taken to protesting in front of the Los Angeles Police Department, holding signs with hashtags like “#CantKillAfrica” and “#BlackLivesMatter.”
