How to tell if you’re working too much

It’s normal to feel like you’re running on empty and only getting a few hours of sleep, but is your job (or jobs) taking over your life? Nowadays, many Americans work more than one position and may have trouble disconnecting from work when at home.

Bringing work home with you can in fact be dangerous for your health, according to Men’s Health.

Being a workaholic is a badge of honor these days. Sixty-hour weeks and late-night emails are practically a requirement in some industries. But working too much can interfere with your health and happiness.

Men’s Health cites a University of Georgia study that found that stress, depression, burnout are more can stem from working too much. Here are five signs that indicate you may be a workaholic, from study author Dr. Malissa Clark.

1. You feel guilty while watching the big game on Sunday or can’t enjoy a non-work activity without feeling anxious. Men’s Health suggests playing a competitive sport or working out at the gym.

2. You’re not actually getting much done while at work. Research has shown people who log more hours may actually get less done, and you may just be creating “busywork” for yourself.

3. Your eyesight is going. Staring at a screen all day can cause your eyes to water and give you a headache. Before you completely go blind, take periodic breaks from the computer and focus your eyes on something else.

4. Your family complains they never see you. Try to set aside time every night just for family time.

5. You’re always the last to leave the office. Some jobs require employees work overtime and 60 hours a week, but if you’re the only one locking up the office at midnight every night, it’s time to change your schedule.
