Arizona’s rash of wrong-way drivers continues

This is the story that YOU wanted to hear us talk about! It received 62 percent of the vote in our Radioactive poll!

The year of the wrong-way crash continues after a wrong-way driver caused a multicar accident on Interstate 10 early Friday morning.

As many as five cars were involved in the wreck and four people were hospitalized.

The Department of Public Safety said a 25-year-old woman was driving in the wrong direction and eventually collided head-on with another vehicle. Three more cars then slammed into the disabled cars.

State law-enforcement and transportation officials called an emergency meeting earlier this year to address the spike in wrong-way crashes after seven people died in a one-week span in May.

In June, the Arizona Department of Transportation began installing new signage, including larger “Do Not Enter” and “Wrong Way” signs on exit ramps. On-ramp pavement markers with arrows pointing in the proper direction have been installed on several Valley freeways as well.
