3 killed in Phoenix-area accidents on Interstate 17, Loop 202

PHOENIX — Three people were killed in rush-hour freeway accidents Monday morning in metro Phoenix.

Two people died in a collision between a commercial truck and another vehicle on southbound Interstate 17 at Dixileta Drive and one person was killed in a rollover on westbound Loop 202 at Loop 101.

An Arizona highway patrol spokesman said a van carrying a man and a woman crashed into the truck, which was parked on the shoulder of I-17 after breaking down.

The van ended up wedged beneath the truck, killing two occupants and injuring a third. The truck driver wasn’t injured.

The crash also forced closure of I-17 at Loop 303, creating miles of backup.

Most of the lanes were reopened by noon.

A less serious rollover crash on I-17 at Northern Avenue also backed up traffic. There were no life-threatening injuries reported in that two-car accident.
