Netflix releases trailer for ‘Narcos,’ days after drug lord escapes

In what may be a genius act of marketing, Netflix released the trailer for its new show, “Narcos,” just days after an infamous drug lord escaped from a Mexican prison.

“Narcos” follows the rise of the Medellin drug cartel in the United States during the 1980s. The Colombian drug operation was headed by Pablo Escobar, one of the most famous drug lords ever.

Before Escobar’s death in the early 1990s, it was estimated he was worth about $30 billion.

Another drug lord who rivals Escobar, Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzman, has been in the headlines since he escaped from prison through an exceptionally well-built tunnel. Authorities are offering a $3.8 million reward for the capture of the head of the Sinaloa Cartel, which operates just across the border from Arizona.

We’re not entirely sure when Netflix had planned to release the “Narcos” trailer before its Aug. 28 premier so it may just be a coincidence it’s grabbing headlines at the same time as Guzman.

Then again, maybe the ad people over at Netflix went to the boss and said, “I’m gonna make you an offer you can’t refuse.”
