Study: Arizonans among nation’s ‘least likely to curse’

According to data analysis from the Marchex Institute, Arizonans watch their mouths better than most.

After examining more than 600,000 phone calls over the last year, Marchex scanned for curse words ranging from A to F to S, logging the frequency of these words for all 50 states.

Research showed that residents of Washington state are the least likely to curse, followed in descending order by Massachusetts, Arizona, Texas and Virginia.

The rudest, most foul-mouthed state was Ohio, whose residents evidently curse more than twice the rate of Washington state residents, according to data.

Marchex also revealed the following data based on the phone calls they processed:

  • 66% of curses come from men
  • The calls that contain the most cursing are more than 10 minutes long. So the longer someone is on the phone, the more likely that call is to devolve.
  • Calls in the morning are twice as likely to produce cursing as calls in the afternoon or evening.
