Fire sends plume of black smoke over downtown Phoenix

PHOENIX — A fire sent a plume of black smoke over downtown Phoenix on Tuesday afternoon.

The two-alarm fire was burning near 28th and Washington streets for a short period of time, and closed the light rail. Before 5 p.m. it was back up and running. Streets between 28th and 32nd along Washington were re-opened just before 5 p.m. as well.

Ben Santillan with Phoenix Fire said the blaze was in the roof of Paramount Promotions.

“It’s very difficult — in between that space is where that fire got — and it’s very difficult to get to,” he said.

Santillan said firefighters’ only option was to contain the flames and allow the roof to burn off.

One nearby business was evacuated. No injuries have been reported.

It is unknown how the fire started.

KTAR’s Martha Maurer contributed to this report.
