Super Bowl XLIX will be a green event, according to SRP

PHOENIX — The turf at the University of Phoenix Stadium won’t be the only green aspect of Super Bowl XLIX in Arizona on Sunday, according to Salt River Project.

“The day of the game, Super Bowl XLIX, will be powered by wind energy provided by Salt River Project,” said spokeswoman Patty Garcia-Likens.

Garcia-Likens said SRP, which powers University of Phoenix Stadium, the site of Sunday’s Super Bowl, will take the total amount of energy used during the game and match that amount with purchases of wind energy.

“So, for every kilowatt hour that is used during the game, we are purchasing that amount of wind energy that will go into the grid,” she said.

Matching the energy used during the game with that of renewable sources is important in offsetting carbon emissions and in promoting clean energy, Garcia-Likens said.

“The more that we do programs like this, the more we invest in that industry,” she said.

Garcia-Likens said it isn’t clear where the wind energy would be purchased from, but said it will likely come from Oregon wind farms.
