Construction underway for Birds Nest at Phoenix Open

Construction on the world’s largest clear-span tent is underway for this year’s Coors Light Birds Nest outside the Waste Management Phoenix Open.

It will take a weekly crew of 30 to put up the 48,000- square-foot tent.

“Well, we’re fully under construction — the 16th hole is almost finished, 17 and 18 are shaping up,” said Danny Calihan, the 2015 Phoenix Open Tournament Chairman. “The Bird’s Nest is now under construction; it’s the last big phase that we start.”

With the Super Bowl here around the same time, the already successful event had to do things a bit different.

“We got started a lot earlier securing things like buses and hotel rooms for people, players and vendors that fly in, we needed to be ahead of the game,” he said.

We’ve added a new bus depot to help folks get to and from their cars, he said.

“We’ve worked a lot with the Super Bowl Host Committee, which we’re a member of, to entertain people who are out here for the Super Bowl and make sure that we show off Phoenix and our community as well as we can,” he said.

As for the rumors that Tiger Woods might play the Phoenix Open for the first time since 2001?

“Well, we would sure love him to come, but we really don’t know at this point,” he said. “I’m sure it would be just a great boost for us; it would make it that much more exciting and we would love to have him come.”
