Faith in Humanity: Iowa couple leaves big tip after bad service

We’ve all heard plenty of stories about extraordinary servers receiving massive tips.

Whether their family fell on hard times, they are supporting children or trying to put their way through school, each viral video and photo always shows someone who we feel “deserves it.”

But what happens to those that give bad service? They’re often mocked online and create negative publicity on sites like Yelp, whether it’s the server’s fault or not.

According to Yahoo!, one Iowa couple, Makenzie and Steven Schultz, made a distinction. They were out for a meal and the service was terrible, but at no fault of the person working. The restaurant was understaffed.

“We could hear the other tables around us making negative comments about the service,” Schultz said. “One table walked out and another stood up and told a group of people waiting for a table to leave.”

Rather than join their fellow diners in complaining, the couple took a moment (OK, a lot of moments) to enjoy each other’s company and relax. When it came time to pay the bill, they tipped $100 on their $66 tab.

“We tried to be as nice to him as possible and he was so nice to us,” Schultz said of the single waiter who was handling nearly the entire restaurant.

After Makenzie posted a photo of the receipt and a small story on Facebook, it blew up overnight.

“I posted it thinking my family and friends would get something out of it, but it just kept getting shared and more comments and more likes,” Schultz said. “I couldn’t believe the response, but it made me realize even more that people are relating to that post.”
