Never forget: A timeline of the major events of Sept. 11

Sept. 11, 2001 was a day that forever remains one of the darkest in American history. It was a day when chaos and destruction prompted the American people to unite in their tragedy and struggle. All other disputes became irrelevant as America’s philosophy and American lives were under attack.

Although Thursday marks the 13th year since the attack, its impact can still be felt all around the world. The American presence in the Middle East, dramatically increased airport security and a new chapter in history books are just a few of the constant reminders of that fateful day.

The timeline below reconstructs some major events, beginning with the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks and concluding with the scheduled opening of One World Trade Center, or the Freedom Tower, to memorialize the victims.
