Winter Olympics talk is about everything but athletes

The Winter Olympics have begun, but I have yet to talk to one person who’s particularly interested.

When I bring up the Sochi Games in conversation, here are the topics that come up:

Did you see the horrific hotel accommodations for the journalists and the athletes? Did you hear about U.S. bobsledder Johnny Quinn who got stuck in the bathroom and had to push his way out through a door with his bare hands? Can you believe the Olympic rings didn’t light up properly during the Opening Ceremony (How embarrassing)? Why are there so many stray dogs? Our team uniforms look like ugly Christmas sweaters. Why can’t our Olympians get their Chobani yogurt?!

I haven’t heard one word about the Games themselves or the athletes, with the exception of disappointment over Lindsey Vonn not competing and Shaun White dropping out of the slopestyle competition because it was too dangerous.

I’d like to tell you who will be America’s “face” of the Winter Olympics, but I honestly don’t know. I’m sure there will be one. Maybe it will be Shaun White, because he’s one of the few names Americans know. Plus, he’s the two-time defending champion in the men’s half-pipe.

Or maybe it will be Lolo Jones. She is the Olympic hurdler who took up bobsledding in 2012. She’s beautiful and talented and very controversial on social media.

Figure skater Gracie Gold is getting some early buzz. If she wins big in Sochi, the 18-year-old may have the most fitting name in Olympic history.

Plus, speedskater Shani Davis has a chance to win his third consecutive Olympic gold medal in the 1000m. That would be incredible.

So, here’s the deal: I’m rooting for all of our athletes to bring home the gold. But honestly, I’m more focused on what’s going to happen off the slope, off the ice and off the bobsled track than on.

Let’s just hope everyone makes it through the Sochi Games safely.
