We all know that break-ups are usually bad. They are messy, emotional and leave us with at least some amount of baggage and anger. This can lead someone to wanting to humiliate his or her ex — NOT a good idea, legally speaking or personally speaking. In Arizona, it is now illegal to take revenge on your ex by posting photos or videos of them online.

On July 24, Arizona’s revenge porn law went into effect. We joined 12 other states and made this not only illegal, but also defined it as a domestic violence offense. Previously referred to as the “revenge porn bill,” the statute can now be found at A.R.S. 13-1425.

It is illegal to use “revenge porn” against your ex. No matter what. If caught, you could go to prison and have to pay a hefty fine, not to mention any civil judgments that would likely come your way. It doesn’t matter if you can see their face or not in the photo. Think about that.

This may seem worrisome, but you should talk about this with your kids. Teenagers all have cell phones now and they make mistakes. Do you want them being slapped with a felony because they wanted revenge?
