Christmas in July: Phoenix Police raising funds for kids in need

PHOENIX — It might be July, but Phoenix’s men and women in blue are already looking forward to making Christmas special for kids in need.

The Phoenix Police Department is working to raise funds for three kindergarten classes at Capital Elementary School near 16th Avenue and Van Buren Street.

The money raised will go toward giving the kids much-needed items such as sweaters, socks and blankets, according to Erin Ring of the department’s Strategic Information Bureau.

The funds will also provide toys to the kids.

“Last year we did trucks for the boy; we did dolls for the girls,” Ring said.

The department on Thursday welcomed Don Taco Mexican Restaurant and the Mighty Moo Ice Cream truck in front of Phoenix Police headquarters to help in the fundraiser.

Ring said it was special to include the Mighty Moo Ice Cream truck. The truck is operated by Connor and Lexi White, the son and daughter of fallen Phoenix Police Officer Eric White, who was killed in the line of duty on Aug. 28, 2004.

Fundraising efforts will continue, and Ring said people can donate by calling Phoenix Police Department’s Public Relation Bureau and asking for information about Capital Christmas.
