Beep, beep: Arizona’s best and worst cities to be a driver

PHOENIX — The next time you’re groaning about how much it costs to fill up the car with gas, you may want to think about packing up and moving to Tucson.

WalletHub ranked the 100 most populated U.S. cities based on car ownership to find the most driver-friendly locations. Tucson was the highest-ranked Arizona city at No. 5.

The study looked at 21 key metrics, including average gas prices, average annual traffic delays, rates of car theft and car clubs per capita.

Tucson had the lowest average gas prices in the nation, twice as low as Los Angeles.

Though Phoenix was placed 66th in driver and car wellness, it was ranked 18th in traffic and road conditions based on how the low amount of days with precipitation. Its national rank was 43rd.

Glendale was the worst city in Arizona for drivers, with a safety ranking of 78th and a total ranking of 56th.

Among the other Arizona cities to make the list; Scottsdale placed 12th, Mesa was 20th, Chandler was 25th and Gilbert was 32nd.
