Iconic Old Town Scottsdale cowboy sign now belongs to city

The sign that welcomes you to Old Town Scottsdale is officially property of the city now.

It only took more than 60 years for that to transpire.

The Scottsdale Independent reports the iconic cowboy sign on the northeast corner of Scottsdale Road and Main Street was recently donated to the city government.

It had been the property of the Scottsdale Area Chamber of Commerce all these years, and the sign points the way to the site of the chamber’s original offices.

“That the sign no longer serves its original purpose is of no consequence to its historical value to the city and its place as a symbol of Scottsdale,” chamber President and CEO Rick Kidder told the Scottsdale Independent.

The cowboy sign was commissioned in 1952 and created by artist Dee Flagg.

The sign has remained in its original location ever since being installed, and today it’s one of the most recognizable landmarks — and a popular spot to take a selfie — of the bustling nightlife and shopping area.
