Hungry? Valley restaurant’s wings named among best in US

PHOENIX — You don’t have to head to the East Coast to get some of the nation’s best buffalo-style chicken wings.

Thrillist said the Vine Tavern and Eatery in Iowa City has some of the tastiest wings in the nation. There are actually four Vine locations — another in Coralville, Iowa and two in Tempe, Ariz. All of the locations use the same recipes.

“If you go to the Vine in Iowa or in north Tempe or south Tempe, you always get the same thing,” general manager Amy Rhodes said.

“We’re the same company,” she said. “We’re the same owner and we share the same recipes.”

Rhodes, who manages the location on Rural and Elliot roads in Tempe, said the key is serving fresh, never frozen wings. The restaurant has been serving the same wing sauce recipes for more than 30 years and all are made in-house.

“We’re not a big chain or anything like that,” she said. “This is like a mom and pop-owned joint.”

Rhodes said the 12 wing flavors the Vine offers are all popular, especially with East Valley customers.

“We have people that drive all the way from east Mesa, Scottsdale and Gilbert just to have our chicken wings,” she said.
