Parents strive to clear ‘Pop-Tart gun’ from son’s record
This is the story that YOU wanted to hear us talk about! It received 89 percent of the vote in our Radioactive poll!
It’s that infamous case of the “Pop-Tart gun,” that landed a Maryland student suspended and left most wondering if they should feel angry or just laugh.
Well, the “Pop-Tart gun” is in the spotlight again, as school officials in Anne Arundel County, Maryland rejected an appeal by the student’s parents who are trying to get the incident removed from their son’s record.
In case you’re unfamiliar, here is the essence of the case: in March 2013, a 7-year-old student ate his breakfast pastry into the shape of a gun, getting him suspended.
The case attracted national attention not only because of its strangeness, but because guns in schools was a highly relevant issue after the recent shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut.
The school board defended the previous actions of the school employees, citing the school principal’s argument that the suspension was a result of a series of behavioral problems, not just the pastry incident.
The family’s lawyer said the parents will appeal to the Maryland State Board of Education.
Whatever the result, this sticky situation gives new meaning to the most important meal of the day.
