Betty says her brother Adam was the baby of the family, the youngest of five children.

“He was our big teddy bear, but he was bigger than us all,” she said.

Adam was born and raised in Phoenix.

“He went to West Valley High, he also went to Kenilworth Elementary School,” Betty added.

Adam had just become a born again Christian. A single dad, he was raising a three-year-old son and going to school.

“He was really, really focused on music,” Betty said. “That was his passion, that’s what he wanted to do, or work with youth as well.”

Phoenix Police Sergeant Darren Burch says it was just after two in the morning on Sunday, April 29th, 2007, when shots rang out at a house party near 32nd Avenue and Durango.

“Lots of people went down,” he said.

Gunmen opened fire, shooting 11 people. Two of them died — Adam Leyva and 19-year-old Heather Miller.

“Approximately 100 people were at this party,” Burch said. “That’s 100 potential witnesses that haven’t come forward.”

Burch says this is “the perfect crime” for Silent Witness, since there were a lot of people there when the crime was committed.
